Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) play a crucial role in Indonesia’s economy. According to data from the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs of the Republic of Indonesia, the MSME sector contributes more than 60% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounts for approximately 97% of total employment in the country. These figures highlight that MSMEs are not merely small businesses—they are the backbone of the national economy.

Despite their significant contribution, many MSMEs still face challenges when trying to scale up. One of the most common obstacles is limited access to financing and business partnerships. Many entrepreneurs believe that their primary problem is a lack of capital. In reality, however, the underlying issue is often the absence of reliable and structured business data.

For financial institutions, data is the foundation of decision-making. Banks, lenders, and investors require clear information to evaluate business performance, growth potential, and potential risks. Such data typically includes financial statements, transaction history, cash flow records, and repayment history.

Unfortunately, many MSMEs in Indonesia still operate informally without proper documentation. Income and expenses are often not systematically recorded, and in many cases, business finances are mixed with personal finances. This makes it difficult for financial institutions to objectively assess the business.

Without reliable data, lenders face challenges in determining whether a business is eligible for financing. As a result, even businesses that appear to be performing well may experience loan rejections or lengthy verification processes.

This is why building reliable business data is essential. Well-organized and documented information not only helps MSMEs better understand their own financial condition but also increases trust from external stakeholders such as banks, investors, and business partners.

Through services such as CBI SME Bureau, MSMEs can begin building a structured business credit profile. With objective and verifiable data available, financial institutions can conduct risk assessments more efficiently and accurately. This ultimately opens greater opportunities for MSMEs to access financing.

Moreover, strong business data also helps MSMEs build credibility in the marketplace. In today’s business ecosystem, trust is no longer built solely on reputation—it is also supported by data that can be verified.

For MSMEs aiming to grow and expand their businesses, building reliable business data is a critical first step. With a solid data foundation, MSMEs can better navigate business challenges and increase their chances of scaling up in an increasingly competitive market.
